Amid delays and complaints, the City of Cape Town said it would continue to collect refuse during the national lockdown.

In a statement on Saturday, the municipality said steps were being taken to outfit refuse workers with personal protective equipment. The required changes may further delay this service delivery, which has been classified as an essential service.

“At this stage, it is difficult to predict the impact to services going forward,” they said. “Residents should be aware, however, that lower-income and higher-density areas are being prioritised when there are delays due to increased risks of the disease spreading quickly in these areas.”

The City promised that the delay should not last longer than a week.

Bins should be left out from 6.30am until 9pm. Any refuse which comes from a household where a member has been diagnosed with Covid-19 must be double-bagged. Drop-off facilities would be closed during the lockdown, as would the Bellville and Athlone refuse transfer stations and the Bellville composting plant.
