Electricity parastatal Eskom has warned the public about a scam in which skelms pretend to be staff and claim Eskom has changed its banking account to Nedbank, then provide those banking details.
The fraudsters use letters, faxes and emails bearing the Eskom logo.
They also forge Nedbank banking details, Eskom said.
“Eskom customers are asked to take note that Eskom does not have a banking account with Nedbank and that Eskom would never send notifications to its customers in this manner.
“Eskom’s banking details appear on customers’ electricity bill and, if in doubt, please contact the Eskom customer call centre on 08600 375 66 for verification.”
To report incidents of fraud, corruption and irregularities involving Eskom, members of the public should call Eskom’s crime line on 0800 11 27 22.
