The body of an unknown man was found dumped on Mnandi Beach in Khayelitsha on Tuesday.

The man is believed to have been murdered then dumped on the beach, and not a drowning victim.

The body was first believed to have been washed ashore, but the clothes were dry and there were no signs of drowning.

Loyiso Mfihlo, a resident from the nearby informal settlement, says: “It is shocking that someone can be killed and dumped on a beach where children swim.

“We were lucky that no child saw the body as it would have been a traumatic experience.”

He says residents did not recognise the man and also didn’t hear or see anything leading up to the death.

“No one heard or saw anything, but it seems that the discovery was made by a resident who called the police.”

Police did not say how the man was killed, or whether he had any wounds.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said: “A case of murder has been opened for investigation after the body of an unidentified man was found yesterday [on Tuesday] in Mnandi Beach.

“All the circumstances surrounding this incident are being investigated with no arrests yet.”

In 2019, the bodies of three drowning victims washed up on Mnandi Beach, several days after they were washed out to see.
