A Cape Flats lawyer who was caught smokkeling Mandrax and tik into the Bellville Regional Court for his client has been released on R3000 bail.
Lennox Pupa of Pupa Attorneys in Litha Park appeared in the same court he was arrested in last week after being caught by officials.
The 39-year-old was busted after he allegedly appeared gesuip while representing one of his clients on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut says the drugs were meant for his client.
“The court orderly was on duty at the Bellville Regional Court when he noticed the lawyer with a green plastic bag, which drew his attention,” says Traut.
“During the court proceedings, the lawyer was excused by the presiding magistrate due to the suspicion that he was intoxicated.”
Traut says as Papu left the courtroom, the police followed him and conducted a search where they found him in possession of mandrax and tik with a combined street value of R9600 in a green plastic sakkie.
“The lawyer, who resides in Khayelitsha, was arrested and is expected to make his court appearance at the same court where he was arrested once he has been charged.
“The circumstances surrounding the matter are still under police investigation.”
According to the charge sheet, Pupa was found with 196 mandrax pille and six packets of tik.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila confirmed: “Lennox Pupa of Pupa Attorneys in Litha Park appeared at the Bellville Magistrates’ Court.
“The 39-year-old father of two was granted bail of R3000 with conditions that he signs at the Lingelethu West Police Station on Fridays between 8am and 8pm.
“The case was then postponed to 2 December for further investigation.”
