A taxi driver has died after he collided with a truck on the N7 Highway on Monday night.
The taxi crashed into the truck carrying a metal container.
The accident happened just after the weighbridge as the truck attempted a U-turn at the Morning Star intersection.
The taxi driver was found stuck under the truck and is believed to have died on impact.
The front of the taxi was smashed and part of the vehicle was still trapped underneath the truck.
Provincial Traffic Chief, Kenny Africa, says one other person was critically injured.
“A heavy motor vehicle and minibus taxi were involved. It was a head-side collision. The minibus was travelling from Atlantis towards Cape Town and the heavy motor vehicle wanted to make a U-turn at Morning Star Crossing. There were no injuries in the heavy motor vehicle,” he said.
ER24 spokesperson, Werner Vermaak, says a passenger, who sat next to the driver, managed to escape death.
“A passenger, believed to have been in the front of the taxi, was found on the scene. He explained that he climbed out of the wreckage shortly after the collision. He was treated for his injuries, which included a fracture of his arm,” Vermaak said.
