Neighbourhood watch members in Mitchells Plain are up in arms after a liquor store owner allegedly klapped one of the members after a bakkie FULL of dop was spotted outside his winkel.
Mark Moses, 58, a member of the Rocklands Neighbourhood Watch, says he was smacked by the liquor store owner on Thursday morning when he went to investigate suspicious activity at the winkel.
The incident happened on the corner of Park Avenue and Caravelle Street at Rocklands Centre.
Mark explains: “I was standing outside performing my duties while a bakkie with wine was standing outside the liquor store.
“He and some other men came over and asked who is Moses and when I turned he klapped me.”
Under Level 3 regulations of the lockdown, liquor sales are banned and no dop may be transported.
Mark says he did not see whether the alcohol came from the bottle store, but the bakkie drove away with it.
“He klapped me so hard that I trembled and he broke my Ray-Ban sunglasses which I want him to pay back.”,
Mark says he does not know why he was assaulted because he was just standing and looking.
“He could not say why he klapped me and I could not fight back because there were many of them. He might have felt guilty because his bakkie had wine.”
Fellow neighbourhood watch member Valerie Moses said they could not open a case because the police did not come out.
She says due to Covid-19, people are encouraged to call out cops rather than go to police stations to report cases.
“The police are failing us as the neighbourhood watch because we have been calling since that morning, but no van came. It is not fair that one of our own got hurt while doing volunteer work in the community.”
