The man, who allegedly tried to shoot Jerome “Donkie” Booysen at a mall in July, will now also face a charge of murder.
Marco Johannes appeared briefly in the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday to apply for bail.
He initially faced two charges of attempted murder for the shooting at Spur in the Soneike Mall in Kuils River.
Booysen was hit in the arm and it is believed one of his guards was also hit. They fired back at Johannes and another gunman.
Initially, it was stated Booysen killed the other gunman.
However, the court heard a different version of events this week.
While in court, police arrested Johannes for the murder of his accomplice.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, confirmed the new charge.
“I was advised a charge of murder will be added to the charge sheet. The bail application has been postponed (to 19 November),” Ntabazalila said.
Booysen was not charged with anything regarding this incident after giving a statement to police.
Last year, there were four attempts on Booysen’s life, including one at the Cape Town International Airport, where he was shot four times.
A week later, while recovering at a Bellville hospital, an assassin disguised as a doctor allegedly tried to take Booysen out with snake venom and a scalpel.
Earlier last year in March, Booysen was driving in Beacon Valley when gunmen opened fire on his vehicle just after 8pm.
