The Western Cape Missing Person’s Unit are looking to give a little love this winter.
The unit is appealing to mense to help collect blankets for poor people in the Cape Town business district.
The organisation in partnership with RPJ Helping Hands, hope to collect at least 300 blankets to warm some hearts and bodies this winter.
Spokesperson for the WCMPU, Candice Sobotker says besides their work of finding missing people and having parties and educational fun days in various communities for children, the organisation have been assisting the RPJ Helping Hands feeding scheme.
Over the past few months they’ve hosted four parties for over 300 underprivileged children in memory of murdered 10-year-old, Charnelle McCrawl from Hanover Park.
“We want our kids to grow up knowing there are people who care,” she says.
“For a few months now we have been assisting with the feeding scheme and have also gotten to know some of the people.
“It is not easy living on the street and the people have to deal with unemployment and hunger and the coming winter. We just want to give a little warmth to those less fortunate.”
Candice says the volunteers work twice a week to ensure that more than 200 homeless people receive meals.
Some of the volunteers also bring along friends and family to assist.
“It's nearing winter and we want to collect 300 or more blankets as soon as possible. It does not have to be new blankets, but as long as they are usable.”
