Cop, 31, charged with corruption

A Milnerton cop has been arrested on charges of corruption.

Police spokesman Captain FC Van Wyk says the arrest comes after a lengthy investigation.

The 31-year-old suspect is believed to have accepted a bribe to tamper with case dockets which led to cases being withdrawn.

“The fight against corruption in police ranks was given a boost [on Tuesday] when an investigation into allegations of illegal activities engaged in by a police official came to a head," Van Wyk says.

“The investigation was related to cases of possession of stolen property and domestic violence, where bribery and tampering with an investigation docket led to cases being withdrawn.”

“Detectives from the Western Cape Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit consequently arrested a detective constable.”

The cop was being detained at Cape Town Central SAPS and is due to appear in Cape Town Court today.

Van Wyk adds: “This arrest shows SAPS management is determined to uproot all forms of corruption and police members involved in these activities are dealt with harshly.”
