A Manenberg athlete has the opportunity to represent his school at the Toyota National Championships for the Physically Disabled and Visually Impaired in Port Elizabeth next month.
Mogamat-Zain September, 14, from Erica Court was born with a limp leg and arm but that isn’t stopping him from reaching for the stars.
His proud grandmother, Jackie Ganief, 56 says she could not be more proud of him but is struggling to raise the R3 000 needed for the trip.
“Mogamat-Zain has been living with me and my husband forever. His mother is not there, she is messed up with drugs,” Jackie says.
“Although he has been born with a limp arm and leg, he plays soccer, does horseback riding, athletics en alles man.
“At Eros, the school he attends, he gets so much physical therapy and he just becomes stronger in his limbs.”
TALENT: Mogamat-Zain, 14
The championships take place 20-25 March and the teen will be racing.
“This is not the first time he was invited to go to such tournaments and whenever he goes, he comes back with medals.
“I am a bit worried because besides the R3 000 that we must raise, they were told they need their own spending money for the trip,” Jackie explains.
His dedicated ouma, who works as a domestic worker, says so far she has only
managed to raise R500.

“I am trying to save my own money, but I do have a list that we got from the school. I go door to door and from business to business asking people if they would like to sponsor Mogamat-Zain because he really wants to go,” Jackie adds.
