A Delft soup kitchen, which took to Facebook for donations after running out of ingredients, has been assisted by a generous sponsor.

The soup kitchen has been assisting dozens of families since the lockdown started in late March.

After their Facebook appeal, they received much-needed support from Frank Julie of the Young People@Work NGO,who donated R3000 towards the purchasing of ingredients.

The soup kitchen founder Asaveka Peko says social media has become a useful tool for fundraising.

“We have been using social media to liaise with most of the donors so that’s how our need is known,” he says.

Immediately after receiving the money, Asavela and his team went to buy the groceries. “Everyone is excited and super encouraged now because they know that we don’t have to scratch our backs and shake our heads thinking about how we will secure the next meal for the people,” says a grateful Peko.

Julie, who is the director of Young People @Work, said they will not stand by with their hands folded and watch people starve.

“Many of our unemployed participants come from the Delft community and we have a moral duty to provide support in whatever form,” he says.

“Since we have the skills of professional fundraising, we mobilized donor support from overseas and locally to support feeding schemes linked to our fundraising mentoring network. Waiting on the government and the Lotto is a waste of time.”
