A Delft ward councillor says she risks her safety every day by going to work at the Hague Recreation Centre which is constantly being vandalised.

On Tuesday night, ward 13 councillor Michelle Adonis said a group of 10 to 15 men were chased away by residents from the centre in Delft Main Road leaving behind broken windows and water pipes and damaged appliances.

“Since February there have been a lot of break-ins at the centre,” says Adonis.

“On Tuesday night, they also stole a geyser from the centre. There were four geysers in the centre and they are all gone.

“In the minor hall, all the chairs have been stolen while there is a small garage that has been petrol-bombed thrice.

“There are security guards posted outside of the centre but they do nothing while we even heard that the guy that was on duty on Tuesday was drinking with the guys who broke in.”

She says her offices have also been burgled.

“This centre used to be an epicentre for local sports, including handicapped sports like basketball and it also served as an exercise hall for the community.

“The last sporting event happened here in July but since then nothing can be done because all the equipment has been stolen or damaged.

“For whatever reason, they broke the water pipes so now the court, which had a multi-million upgrade in 2018, is waterlogged.

“These actions have been done by selfish people who do not care about the greater community.”

The neighbourhood watch helped clean up the centre yesterday.
