A Manenberg man is set to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court today for allegedly killing his stepson in self-defence in a knife fight.
The 47-year-old man was arrested in hospital on Thursday afternoon, where he was being treated for a stab wound to his chest.
According to Daily Voice sources, during the fight at his home in Gouritz Street, the dad attacked his two stepsons, killing one and leaving the other in a critical condition.
Manenberg police station commander, Brigadier Sanele Zama, says cops were called to the scene after the trio arrived at the Heideveld Emergency Centre for medical treatment.
He explains the dad was spraypainting a car for a client when an argument erupted.
“It is alleged that the 47-year-old male is the stepfather of a 20 and 16-year-old male.
“He is self-employed and was busy respraying a car at his address in Gouritz Street, Manenberg.
“His two stepsons came to him looking for someone that was not there, an argument broke out between the stepsons and the father.”
He says the two stepsons became violent and started smashing the client’s car with bricks.
“The sons became aggressive and violent by smashing the car that he was busy with, they also went into the house where the 20-year-old son took a knife and physically attacked the father, attempting to stab him.”
Zama explains during the scuffle, the 20-year-old stabbed the father in the left side of his chest and the father retaliated by stabbing both sons in the neck.
According to the source, the traumatised man loaded the injured brothers into the client’s red Nissan Sentra and rushed them to the hospital himself.
“He even took the knives with him and left everything for the police.
“If you look at the car, you can still see the brick lodged in the rear windscreen and how the windows were smashed.
“It was a vicious fight and the car is filled with blood from all three of them,” says the source.
Zama says while at hospital, the 20-year-old brother died while the teen is still in a critical condition.
“After the stepfather received treatment for his stab wound, he was taken into custody.
“He will remain in custody until he is charged and will appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court soon,” he says.
When the Daily Voice visited the family, they declined to comment, saying they were making preparations for the 20-year old man’s janaazah.
