HELP: Sumaya Taliep gave 200 masks to Cass Goolam HELP: Sumaya Taliep gave 200 masks to Cass Goolam
Two police stations have been blessed with facial masks, thanks to a City of Cape Town councillor.
Councillor Sumaya Taliep handed out 200 masks at the Mitchells Plain Police Station yesterday, and a second batch of 170 masks were given to Woodstock Police Station.
Taliep says she’s been building up relationships with staff at both police stations for years, where she continues to do community work and projects.
“I have an ongoing relationship with Mitchells Plain Police Station, working on community projects in areas like Freedom Park,” she says.
“The staff are at the frontline, and play a role in containing the spread of the virus.
“Today, I handed over 200 washable masks to the Station Commander, Brigadier Cass Goolam, for use by his staff and the public.
“I also handed over 170 masks to Woodstock Police Station.”
She says the masks are a donation by the City of Cape Town.
The police fall under the nationals SAPS structures.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa, says they appreciate the masks as they can do with additional personal protective equipment during the state of disaster.
Earlier this week the Mitchells Plain cop shop was closed for decontamination after an employee tested positive for COVID-19.
“The gesture comes at a critical time when SAPS members are in the frontline enforcing lockdown regulations since the outbreak of COVID-19,” says Potelwa.
“Although the SAPS provides protective equipment to its members, such a donation is welcomed as you can never have enough of PPEs.
“The gesture is also viewed as a step towards strengthening relations between SAPS and local public representatives.”
