This after they pulled over five suspected skelms and found their getaway car loaded with cellphones, laptops and guns.
Last Wednesday, cops held a stake-out operation to monitor the movements of a rented silver Renault Sandero.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says the team pounced when they spotted the car speeding on the N1 highway.
“The observation team saw a silver Renault Sandero with registration number FS68JCGP speeding on the N1,” he says.
“Back-up was called and the vehicle was pulled over on the R300. Inside the vehicle, a 9mm firearm with the serial number filed off, was found, as well as numerous laptops, cellphones and tablets for which the occupants could not give a reasonable explanation of where it came from.
“Another Norinco 9mm pistol containing a magazine with five rounds of ammunition was found.”
The men, aged between 22 and 33, were arrested for the possession of a prohibited firearm and the possession of suspected stolen goods and detained at Kuils River Police Station.
“The vehicle, which belongs to a rental company in Boeing Road, Elma Park, Edenvale, was not reported stolen, but was used to commit the crimes,” Van Wyk says.
Hours later, it was established that the suspects were linked to an earlier burglary in a shopping centre in Worcester.
“The thorough investigation of crime and the bringing of perpetrators before court is crucial in the efforts of the SAPS to ensure convictions. The investigating officer will oppose bail,” Van Wyk added.
The suspects will appear in the Kuils Rivier Magistrates’ Court once charged.
