The man accused of killing Mamre traffic cop Deon Sampson made his first appearance in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
Luvo Mlandu was arrested on Friday night, minutes after the gruesome murder of Deon, a City of Cape Town traffic officer.
The 46-year-old dad of three died after he was run over and dragged by a minibus taxi driver for several hundred metres during a road block operation Khayelitsha.
Deon was checking the license disc on a taxi waiting in the queue when the driver suddenly accelerated, ran him over and dragged his body along the road.
A high-speed chase ensued and several rounds of ammunition were fired at the vehicle before Mlandu – who’s believed to have been gesuip – was arrested.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Eric Ntabazalila, Luvo’s case has been postponed to next Tuesday, 18 August for bail information.
Deon’s family were not present at court.
His bereaved wife of 19 years Lucian Sampson says they’re not interested in what happens to her husband’s killer.
“Whatever happens to him is not going to bring my husband back. Deon lost his life while doing what he loved.
“I don’t care what happens to him (the accused). I do not hate him, but I certainly do not have love for him either,” the distraught widow told the Daily Voice on Tuesday.
The well-known traffic official is expected to be laid to rest this weekend.
