A Bonteheuwel family who were happy to see cops fight crime in their area says they are devastated after one of their dogs, which was chained in the backyard, was shot and killed by police officers during a search for skollies.
The family, who only want to be identified as the Adams family, say they allowed cops to search their home in Bonteheuwel Avenue on Sunday after gangsters opened fire.
They claim cops did a brief search while their three dogs were chained up in the backyard.
The 31-year-old mother says she believed the search was over when cops raced to the backyard and demanded the dogs be unchained and began shooting.
“We allowed the police inside our home and into our in-laws’ home as we are God-fearing people and we were happy to see the police because of all the shootings,” she says.
“When they walked to the front, I saw the one being argumentative with my cousin, saying we must untie the dogs and my cousin said he cannot because it’s not his pets.
“The officer, who was followed by others, just marched to the backyard and began shooting.
“The one dog’s hair was shot off a bit and the other which was still on her chain, named Skylar, had jumped over the neighbour’s wall and was shot.”
Sadly the dog died on Wednesday.
TRAGEDY: Bonteheuwel family says Skylar died from gunshot wound
“She was like a family to us,” says the hartseer wife.
However, police spokesman Siyabulela Malo says the dog attacked cops: “The members conducted a search in a house in Bonteheuwel Avenue after alleged shootings occurred in the area on Sunday.
“The dog attacked the police members when they immediately entered the premises. The family is advised to come forward and
furnish a statement to SAPS.”
