STUNNED COLLEAGUES: Richard Bosman

The City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security boss Richard Bosman left the municipality abruptly this week, leaving his colleagues stunned.

Bosman, who has long served as the executive director for Safety and Security allegedly informed City Manager, Lungelo Mbandazayo, that he was going on retirement.

According to a source, the incident happened on Wednesday morning leaving his colleagues shocked and confused.

“There were some issues between him and the City Manager where he was to be moved to be the executive director for the Corporate Services department, but he allegedly refused and then went on retirement. Some begged him to stay, but he refused.”

City spokesperson Priya Reddy confirms that Bosman has left, but says he did not state the reasons in his letter to Mbandazayo.

“Mr. Bosman was offered the role of Executive Director for Corporate Services, while the current director is seconded to coordinate the City’s Covid-19 vaccine rollout and response. He accepted this role and then unexpectedly submitted his early retirement letter.”

Reddy says Vincent Botto will take over from Bosman until the position is filled and says this will have no impact on the running of the department.

“Mr. Botto is a capable and experienced leader who will ensure service delivery continues as per normal. The City Manager is not aware of any disciplinary action against Mr. Bosman before he took up his early retirement.”

Bosman could not be reached on Thursday.
