There was joy as a kiddies mobile library aimed at empowering young and old was launched at Cafda in Retreat.
The library situated in Ensor Road saw about 100 patrons gather to welcome and celebrate a new journey for the community on Saturday, provided by the Siyazana Youth Development Fund.
Bradwin Daniels, a community leader, encourages everyone to take advantage of it.
“It will provide a safe space for doing homework and reading for the children, and we also have books for adults as we know they don’t really spend time on the internet but would rather read. We made sure they’re catered for too.
“This is to improve the literacy rate in our communities and as adults we must lead by example.”
He says the library is run under the wing of MI Community Projects which focuses on community upliftment and runs a soup kitchen and aftercare.
Ian Miller of Siyazana says: “We identified the huge need they had, not only in terms of feeding the community but their educational needs as well.
“Siyazana YDF decided to not only support them with the equipment needed for the aftercare facility, but also to donate a community-based library.
“The response from the community on the day (of the launch) was overwhelming and the excitement from the children could not be contained.”
