A group of gender rights activists are calling on Manenberg residents to assist them in opposing the bail of the man accused of bashing his girlfriend to death with a broomstick.
Angry protesters gathered at Athlone Magistrates’ Court yesterday where they petitioned the Magistrate to deny the bail application by Ebrahiem Adams, 32, who is accused of killing his girlfriend Fildenhia Benjamin, 42.
Adams was busted earlier this month after a three-month wait for the results of the post-mortem report.
Fildenhia’s brother, Severino, 39, told the Daily Voice that his sister was attacked in a jealous rage.
They claim Adams had been beating the mother of three for many years as they begged her to leave him.
On the day of the attack he allegedly became enraged while watching her play games on another man’s phone and hit her over the head with the broomstick.
The case was investigated by Manenberg detectives who were forced to wait for the results of the post-mortem before making an arrest.
During proceedings, it was revealed that due to the cases being combined, the bail hearing had to be postponed to 29 November.
Caroline Peters of the Callas Community Foundation, which assists victims of gender-based violence cases in Athlone, says they learnt about Fildenhia’s tragic story in the Daily Voice.
“Our women and children are dying on the Cape Flats and we say no to gender-based violence.
“We are gatvol.
“We are calling on Manenberg residents to join us back at court on 29 November at 10am to protest against his application.”
