An Uitsig oupa who died after allegedly being beaten and tasered by police will be laid to rest.
Hartseer relatives of Petrus Miggels, 55, say they could not believe their eyes when identifying the body at Tygerberg Mortuary on Monday, just days after his death.
His girlfriend, Cecelia Meintjies, 55, says he was sent to the smokkie by a neighbour on Friday as the nationwide lockdown commenced when he was stopped by police.
While his death is being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), his family says they have started funeral preparations.
A 40-year-old relative, who accompanied Cecelia at the mortuary, says they got a skrik when they saw his body.
“You could see he was beaten and it looked like a truck drove over him,” the relative says.
“We tried to get answers at the mortuary about the cause of death and the only thing they told us is that it was not a natural death and that all they could say is that it was still under investigation.
“We have not heard from IPID about the investigation, but we were told we could have the body so he will be buried at Maitland on 9 April.
“With the lockdown, we are going to have a private funeral at the house.”
IPID spokesperson, Sontaga Seisa, says the post-mortem was completed on Tuesday and they are waiting for the report.
He says at this stage the investigation is ongoing.
