SHOCK: Friends shot in Bonteheuwel driveway SHOCK: Friends shot in Bonteheuwel driveway
A young woman and her male friend were shot in her driveway as gang shootings flared up in Bonteheuwel on Wednesday night.
The 19-year-old meisie took a bullet to the chest and is currently in Somerset Hospital.
The 22-year-old was shot in his right leg by a gunman who opened fire on the two friends in Prunus Street for no apparent reason.
This area in Bonteheuwel called the Backstreets, which lines the N2 between Jakes Gerwel and Robert Sobukwe, has been known to be volatile as different gangs fight to control the area’s drug trade, or rob innocent people.
It is clear whether the two were caught in the crossfire or were the intended victims, but neighbours say they were innocent and not linked to any gangs.
A neighbour said: “Just when things calm down and we think it’s safe for our children to be outside, something like this happens.
“It is upsetting and very wrong. Our children can’t be safe anywhere anymore. Jy moet te bang wies om in jou eie driveway te staan want die goed sal jou skiet in jou huis,” says the concerned mother.
Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed the incident.
“Cases of attempted murder were opened for investigation following a shooting incident that occurred Wednesday night at 9.55pm in Prunus street, Bishop Lavis,” she says.
