According to a source, Law Enforcement officers of the new Neighbourhood Safety Teams (NST) chased after the skelms after they were spotted cutting the cables with a hacksaw.
“The officers were patrolling when a resident told them there were five guys cutting cables behind a school in Bramble Way.
“The officers went to the scene which is between the Bonteheuwel and Netreg stations and saw the five cable thieves still busy cutting the cables and started chasing them.
“Two of them got away and the one still ran away with the hacksaw in his hand. They arrested three skelms and took the cables,” says the source.
Law Enforcement spokesperson, Wayne Dyason, confirms the arrest of three men, aged 18, 19 and 44.
“On Tuesday while on duty doing vehicle patrols through Bonteheuwel, officers received a call from a member of the public about a cable theft in progress.
“On arrival they saw unknown males busy digging for more cables. When the suspects spotted the Law Enforcement officers, they fled the scene.
“With the help of the community, the officers managed to arrest three suspects.”
The three men were taken to Bishop Lavis Police Station where they were charged for damage to Prasa infrastructure and malicious damage to property.
Dyason says the cables, which were 43 metres long, were taken by the officers and handed in as evidence.
