Peace and calm have been restored to the streets of Blikkiesdorp after a man was killed and several shacks were petrol-bombed and gutted over the weekend in vigilante attacks.
However, some residents say the peace is temporary and the vigilantes will return to finish their “hit list”.
Police confirmed the house of an alleged drug dealer had been petrol-bombed on Saturday night.
A 20-year-old man was also beaten to death and his body found on the outskirts of Blikkiesdorp.
He had been accused of working with the alleged drug merchant.
On Monday, community members confirmed people had rebuilt their burnt homes but are fearing more attacks.
Scared residents called Daily Voice on Saturday night, some whispering inside their hokkies, asking for the police to be contacted and sent in.
“It’s war here, God help us,” a community member said yesterday.
“They ran around with guns and we could hear them on the loudspeaker calling out names.
“They have a list and they say they are not done yet.”
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed the murder and fires: “According to reports, the community of Blikkiesdorp set alight an alleged drug house and in this process eight to 10 shacks which were also destroyed.
“A 20-year-old man was also severely assaulted by the community and died due to injuries sustained. No arrest has been made.
“Taking the law to yourself is a criminal offence. The people have the responsibility to report crime to police.”
