There was panic and chaos at the Mutual Railway Station in Pinelands on Sunday after a fire broke out.
Smoke and flames poured from the building shortly after 6pm, shocking commuters arriving at the station.
It is believed the fire started at an informal structure, situated next to the station building.
The City’s Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, Theo Layne, says a team responded to the fire at 6.37pm.
“A container used by the vendors was alight, Nobody was inside. No injuries have been reported and the cause of this fire is undetermined. The fire was extinguished at 7.18pm,” says Layne.
Metrorail spokesperson, Riana Scott, says the incident is being investigated.
“The fire was evidently near a shop at the foot of the stairs, and did not affect operations at the station or the train service and no injuries were reported. The cause and damage will be investigated by our sister division in charge of leases/facilities,” says Scott.
