The Strandfontein CPF, along with local fishermen, say they are relieved to see no more cars parked off during the night on quiet beaches along the notorious Baden Powell Drive.
The stretch of road between Khayelitsha and Strandfontein made headlines in recent times after at least seven bodies were found there this year.
Last week, the Strandfontein Community Policing Forum said during patrols they found dozens of couples having sex on the beach.
Mense were min gespin about the recent spate of murders and still parked off in the dark making them soft targets for criminals.
CPF chairperson Sandy Schuter said the couples were unaware of their surroundings and didn’t even notice crime-fighters coming up to them, despite shining their torches.
She says they patrolled again over the past weekend and were relieved to find the beaches deserted except for groups of fishermen: “We conducted routine patrols throughout the community, including the beach areas again and I am happy to say that there was nobody parked off on the dangerous stretch of road. I’m glad that the message was received about the risks of parking off, especially at night in the coastal area. It is for your own safety.
Sandy adds: “ I can confirm that there must have been a lot of fish in the sea, as many fishermen occupied the beachfront. I personally spoke to the fishermen about the dangers but they fish in numbers and said that before the curfew at midnight, they will pack up.
“They laughed about the previous article in Daily Voice but agreed that it is very dangerous.”
Angler Keith Blake says fishing at night is a risk but they’ve started a “buddy system” to keep each other safe.
He advises fishermen to drive in reliable vehicles, make sure they have enough fuel, carry fully charged cellphones and to be aware of their surroundings: “The Daily Voice did a good job with that article, it now prevents people from landing in trouble, people are now afraid to get caught.”
