Police say they have caught a young mother who abandoned her baby at a train station.
The 21-year-old woman was arrested in Langa on Tuesday and will be charged with child abandonment.
SAPS’ Joseph Swartbooi says: “We can confirm that a 21-year-old woman has been traced and arrested by the investigating officer on Tuesday in Langa.
“Once charged, she is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court on a charge of child abandonment where bail will be opposed.
“We wish to thank the community at large for their assistance and information provided that assisted the investigating officer to trace, arrest and bring the suspect before court.”
body.copy.bold: On Monday, the Bellville Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit asked for assistance from the public regarding the missing Mfuleni woman who allegedly left the one-year-old child at the Bellville Station on 11 July.
Swartbooi said they had been looking for Lisa Xala, 21.
“According to reports, a 15-month-old baby was found abandoned at the Bellville Railway Station on Sunday, 11 July, at about 4pm by a security guard,” he said.
The baby was taken to Bellville SAPS.
