Delft residents are shocked and upset after finding the body of a newborn baby in the bushes along Symphony Way.
The baby girl was lying on her back with the umbilical cord still attached.
She was found near Blikkiesdorp on Monday evening and the mom is being sought by residents and police.
Delft Community Police Forum (CPF) chairperson Charles George says the baby was found by residents.
“It’s such a horrible experience to see the body of a newborn baby that’s just been dumped,” he says.
“This is a very sad situation and we want to thank the community as well for standing up and bringing this to the front and not just burying it in the sense where no one knows about it even the authorities.”
George says mothers need to be given options of where they should go in such cases.
“I think we need to give women and young girls options instead of resorting to such an extent.
“We need support structures in the community for women and girls who are in her situation and have nowhere to go.”
He adds that the mother should not be judged harshly as no one understands what she was going through when she dumped her newborn baby.
“I think we don’t need to be in the position to judge.
“We are not quite sure of the reason for her actions and her circumstances.”
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi says that Delft Police have registered a case of concealment of birth.
“Police responded to a complaint and upon arrival on
Symphony near to a bushy area they found a foetus dumped by an unknown person.
“The investigation continues.”
