Another Cape school has been forced to close their doors for deep-cleaning due to a positive case of Covid-19.
A former school principal Nadeem Hendricks took to Facebook to express his concerns about schooling during the epidemic, saying: “ [I] warned you it is going to be a killing field. But WCED demands teachers to report back on Friday when the school reopens. Pathetic treatment of staff.”
According to him, St. Augustine Primary School in Wynberg has shut down after a staff member tested positive for the Coronavirus.
Kerry Mauchline, spokesperson to Education Minister Debbie Schäfer, said they could not comment on individual cases.
“Due to the amount of queries that we are receiving, and unsubstantiated reporting on Covid-19 cases in schools on various platforms and in media, the WCED is currently in the process of verifying these cases,” Kerry says.
Meanwhile, a teacher at a Mitchells Plain school told the Daily Voice they are afraid as the number of cases continue to grow.
On Monday, Grade 7 and matric pupils will return to school.
The teacher says staff will work in teams to implement social distancing and do temperature checks.
“But what happens when more than one person falls ill?
“At our school we have up to 40 children in one classroom, even more.
“Who will stand in for that teacher and what will happen to that class?
“What about teachers with underlying health issues?”
But, Kerry says all schools have been provided with guidelines on cleaning, as well as what to do when there is a positive case of Covid-19 in a school.
In recent days, Parkvale Primary, the Hague Primary and Sinethemba High confirmed cases of Coronavirus.
