The ANC and Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato put their differences aside and yesterday visited the home of slain councillor Nokuthula Bolitye to pay their respects.

Bolitye, 50, was shot and killed in Crossroads on Monday.

This was the second attempt on her life since last year.

The leader of the ANC in the council, Xolani Sotashe, said they went to support the family: “We went to convey our condolences and also to comfort the family of our late comrade.”

Mayor Plato said this was not the time to fight but to unite.

“There’s a time when we need to put politics aside, we can’t tolerate leaders, politicians killed like this, we need to unite on this,” he said.

“My request to SAPS and provincial commissioner of the Western Cape, General Patekile, is to leave no stone unturned in this matter.”

Bolitye had been in charge of Ward 36 and was a councillor for five years.

According to Plato, the deceased had survived a previous attempt on her life in May last year, in which two other people were injured, including her teenage son.

SAPS spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi says the woman was sitting in a vehicle in front of her Crossroads home on Monday when she was attacked.

“She was shot and killed in Gqolomba Street in Old Crossroads, 12 July, at about 4pm,” he said.

“According to reports, the victim was seated in a minibus taxi in front of her home, when three unknown males approached the vehicle and fired gunshots at the victim.

“The suspects fled the scene in an undisclosed direction and are yet to be arrested. Nyanga police is investigating a murder.”
