More than 20 years ago, his dad was nicknamed Tupac for his uncanny resemblance to the late American hip hop artist and actor.
And now 16-year-old Keanon Smith of Goodwood has taken over the title from his father, and it’s clear to see why.
The teenager is a dead ringer for Tupac Shakur, who passed away more than two decades ago. And he says he regularly gets double-takes from mense amazed by his looks.
Tupac Amaru Shakur, also known by his stage names 2Pac, Makaveli, and Pac, sold over 75 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
But at the height of his career, the 25-year old was gunned down on 7 September 1996 in a drive-by shooting.
He died six days later in hospital. His killer was never found.
Rap mogul Suge Knight Sr. reportedly claimed Reggie Wright Jr. killed Tupac while insisting HE was the real target of the infamous shooting.
Tupac’s double disc albums All Eyez on Me(1996) and his Greatest Hits (1998) are among the best-selling albums in the United States, and he also starred in six movies, including Poetic Justice (1993) and Gridlock’d (1997).
A new film called All Eyez On Me is currently playing in South African theatres, telling the “true and untold” story of the prolific rapper, poet and activist.
It stars Demetrius Shipp Jr. as Tupac and Jada Pinkett Smith as Kat Graham.
The film was released in America on 16 June, Tupac’s birthday.
As his son sports Tupac’s trademark bandana tied in bunny ears, Aubrey, 40, says it’s no surprise to see why people think Keanon is Tupac’s doppelgänger.
And the dad says he too was nicknamed Tupac during his schooldays in Bridgetown and Strandfontein.
“Even today some people do not know what my real name is,” says Aubrey.
“When I was in high school they called me Tupac and I even had the nose ring.
“Keanon is now a younger version of Tupac, it’s amazing,” he says looking at his son.
The single dad of five children - aged 16, 13, 12, 10 and nine - says they are also die-hard Pac fans.
“I know his music, I love the songs Hit Me Up and Changes,” says Keanon.
Aubrey says Tupac may have died more than 20 years ago, but his music is still alive.
“My favourite song of his is Dear Mamma, it was my inspiration as a youngster,” he adds.
