A Mossel Bay teen needs R100 000 for a spine operation after she was diagnosed with severe scoliosis a month ago.
Logan de Vries, 14, suffers excruciating pain every day due to the spinal deformity.
Scoliosis is when the spine curves sideways and often occurs during the growth spurt just before puberty.
Mom Jacqueline de Vries says she desperately needs help to heal her only child. Sadly, she lost her other child three years ago.
“Logan is scheduled to have the surgery on 26 May at the Winelands Medi Clinic, leaving us with very little time to come up with the necessary funds.
“She loves the outdoors and is a member of the lifesaving club, she also plays chess and the deformity of her spine restricts her from doing what she loves.”
Logan first noticed her hip looking out of place in July 2020 while taking a bath.
“Due to the Covid outbreak we did not go to the doctor right away as she wasn't in any pain.
“Her back was still normal and nothing else was noticeable at that stage,” says Jacqueline.
“Early in December, she visited her grandparents in Cape Town and she bent to tie her shoes when her uncle noticed a bump on her back.”
During the spine fusion surgery, the spine will be realigned using metal pins to keep it in place.
