The Cape Flats Women Alumni is dedicated to giving females the tools to empower themselves.
Started by activist Roegshanda Pascoe last November, the organisation makes use of volunteers and their own staff to teach women a variety of skills.
“We have partnered with people such as R Labs to give the women computer courses, while we also send them on management and leadership courses.
“We have private companies that take in some women for work experience and we also make use of yoga and art to allow them to heal from a variety of issues.”
Roegshanda, who is also the chairperson of the Manenberg Safety Forum, said that women suffer from many issues such as abuse, trauma-tic divorces or the tragic loss of children, and her organisation has been key in helping over 50 women overcome them all.
“We have had women who came back to us to say that they now have the courage and mental strength to stand up for themselves against abuse while another thanked us for giving her the strength she needed to help her child”.
