Staff at the Animal Welfare Society in Philippi say they are horrified after seeing one of the “worst cases” of neglect when a puppy arrived at their hospital with its rotting eye popped out and a massive bug infestation.
Spokesman, Allan Perrins, says they had to euthanize the German Shepherd cross puppy.
Perrins says the dog was brought in a plastic bag and found to be infected with fleas and ticks. Its one eye had popped out.
“A young couple decided to get rid of their sick puppy. The young German Shepherd cross was admitted suffering from a rotting and protruding eyeball.
“The puppy was so badly infested with fleas and ticks that the owners put him into a plastic bag to prevent ticks and fleas from jumping off and biting them.
“The puppy was too far gone for us to save him. His hearing was also partially impaired by bunches of fat ticks that extended right into his tiny ear canal.”’
Allan says they believe the dog was abused: “I have since been told that the reason the family acquired the dog was to breed with it.
“The degree of neglect and indifference that this poor puppy has had to suffer is so typical of backyard breeders who ‘breed for greed’.
“This couple are so fortunate to have sought our help before someone reported them because they would be staring a court case in the eye.”
