A disabled young woman from Phumlani Village received a
special surprise for her birthday as community workers rallied to host a princess party for her.
Alvina De Jager, who has cerebral palsy, made a wish to have a Princess Sofia cake for her 20th birthday, but had no idea it would come true. A local
community worker, Beryl
Williams, went the extra mile to surprise her.
Williams, who frequently hands out food in Phumlani Village, says she heard of the young woman’s wish last week and made appeals for donations.
“I know her and her mommy for years now because they always come when I hand out food.
SOPHIA CAKE: Special birthday surprise for Alvina.
“She is in a wheelchair and can’t really do anything for herself and when I heard her only wish was to have a Princess Sofia cake I thought I must do something.
“I can cook, but I can’t bake, so I put the appeal on my WhatsApp status and then one of the
managers from Pick 'n Pay in Constantia said they would make the cake.
“I got other cakes and treats and had a lekker party at the Phumlani Community Church.”
Mom Virgina Oliphant, 37, says Alvina was shocked when she saw the tablecloths, cakes and gifts.
“She was so surprised and they really made her feel special.
HAPPY DAY: Alvina De Jager
“She was diagnosed when she was 11 months old and has always been in a wheelchair.
“I work as a cook at local schools and we couldn’t afford to have a party for her.
“It may seem like a small thing, but it meant the world to Alvina.”
