The Go Together community centre in Kuyasa, Khayelitsha, was a sea of blue as about 500 ANC members shed their yellow T-shirts to join the opposition.
The angry members burnt their ANC T-shirts, with 70-year-old Nomathemba Nwebani saying: “I have lost hope in the ANC because all services for this ward are benefited by people from Makhaza.
“We don’t even have a community hall here but Makhaza has two, and even the library.”
The shock move comes after members expressed unhappiness at the ANC’s candidates list for the upcoming municipal elections, taking place on August 3.
ANC members in Khayelitsha have complained that the ward councillors on the list were not those chosen by the community.
DA leader in the province Patricia de Lille welcomed her party’s new members with open arms while ANC Western Cape spokesman Yonela Diko said the rogue members had a misplaced sense of entitlement.
“It is only a desperate DA that would encourage entitlements, which has now resulted in the internal fights within the DA... he said.
