Three alleged car skelms are set to appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Thursday after they were caught removing the mags of a hijacked vehicle in Grassy Park.
Grassy Park Police Station commander Colonel Dawood Laing says the three men were caught at a mechanics workshop on Monday after a tip-off that they were stripping a stolen VW Jetta.
“The Jetta was reported stolen during a hijacking earlier in February and a case was registered at the station.
“On Monday night the Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) received a tip-off that the vehicle was at a workshop on Prince George Drive and they went to have a look,” he said.
Laing explains on arrival cops found the trio removing the mags from the Jetta and placing it on another vehicle in the workshop.
“They were starting to strip the Jetta and had already put the mags on a Fiat Uno standing in the yard and officers checked the Jetta and confirmed it was a hijacked vehicle.
“The officers sent both cars to Bellville for further investigations.
“When questioned, the 42-year-old suspect claimed he owned the car.
“He and two other men from Steenberg, aged 27 and 28, were arrested and the investigation into whether they are linked to the hijacking will continue.”
The trio are expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court tomorrow for possession of a stolen motor vehicle and stolen car parts.
