CANAL FROM HELL - Manenberg rocked by double murder as bodies pile up along infamous waterways

MANENBERG was rocked by a double murder in the early hours of Monday morning, while a woman was killed in a hit and run along Duinefontein Road on Sunday night. 

After reports of shooting from Tambo Village residents, mense woke to find the bodies of two men riddled with gunshot wounds lying near the canal along Silverstream Road. 

Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala reported: “Manenberg police registered two counts of murder following the discovery of two bodies at a canal near Silverstream Road, Manenberg. According to reports, Tambo Village residents heard gunshots at around 2.30am on Monday, 27 January.

“The deceased males aged 40 and 52 both sustained gunshot wounds on their upper bodies. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.”

This is the second murder incident this month near one of Manenberg’s infamous canals, which has become a killing field in some cases and a dumping ground in others for the area’s warring gangs. 

On 7 January, a 22-year-old was gunned down at close range by alleged gang members near the canal along Duinefontein Road.

A relative added at the time that the killing is allegedly linked to an incident in which two mense were shot outside the Athlone Magistrate’s Court in December.

In a separate incident in Manenberg on Sunday, a woman was killed on Duinefontein after a driver allegedly knocked her down and sped off, leaving her to die in the road.

The fatal incident on Sunday night has sparked a police investigation as cops hunt the driver responsible.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said that according to reports the driver of the vehicle failed to stop and drove away.

Van Wyk said: “A case of culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving case is being investigated by Manenberg SAPS, after a 26 year old female suffered fatal injuries when an unknown motor vehicle knocked her down on Duinefontein Road, on Sunday 25 January 2026 at 9.15pm. 

“The driver failed to stop and drove away. Further charges will be added to this fatal crash investigation.”
