Off-duty police officer killed in Browns Farm home

An off-duty police officer who had been discharged from hospital a few days after being admitted for nearly three months has been shot and killed at his home in Browns Farm.

Crime activists have expressed shock at the murder of the Sergeant who was stationed at the Rapid Rail Unit.

It is alleged that just after 8pm in Ubuntu Street, Browns Farm, Philippi on Monday, 19 January, the police officer was at home and had walked to the toilet that is located in the backyard of the property when he was confronted by gunmen.

While urinating, two suspects entered the property and ran into the toilet and fired several shots at him.

The suspects then fled the scene in a vehicle that was apparently parked around the corner.

It is understood that no items were removed from the scene.

It's further alleged the police officer had been hospitalised since November and was discharged on Friday.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said the police officer, who was attached to the Rapid Rail Unit in Pinelands, was off duty at the time of the shooting.

She reported: “It is alleged that two yet-to-be-identified suspects shot the 48-year-old victim in the upper body and later fled. He died on the scene.

“DPCI detectives have instituted an investigation after a murder docket was opened.

The motive for the incident is the subject of the police investigation currently underway. No arrests have been made yet.”

Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile expressed condolences to the deceased police official’s family and colleagues.

Police said the identity of the deceased police officer is withheld until his next of kin has been informed.

Civil rights and crime organisation Fight Against Crime SA (FACSA) also extended its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the police official. 

A statement read: "This senseless act has robbed a family of a loved one and the country of a dedicated public servant.

"FACSA stands in solidarity with the SAPS during this difficult time and trusts that the investigation currently underway will bring accountability and justice.

"Our thoughts are with the fallen officer’s loved ones and colleagues as they mourn this loss.”
