IN HONOUR of Nelson Mandela’s legacy of service and compassion, the Daily Voice teamed up with Wholesun Bread, 1UP Cash & Carry and I4 Distributors to make a real impact on the Cape Flats by supporting some feeding initiatives.
For 67 minutes, the teams helped serve meals and donated groceries and bread to feed the Manenberg and Rocklands communities.
A small act to make a big difference and a reminder that even brief moments of kindness can spark lasting change – in true Madiba spirit.
This collective effort truly embodied the spirit of Ubuntu, inspiring hope and unity in communities facing the greatest challenges.
Rocklands’ The Wonders of the New Generation feeding scheme began its journey in 2018 and has been growing ever since.
It was started in response to the rising need for food security caused by poverty and high unemployment in the area.
Today, it not only supports its local community but also reaches out to neighbouring areas such as Westridge, Portlands, and even as far as Tafelsig – offering a warm plate and hope to those who need it most.
The soup kitchen feeds around 180 residents on a regular day, but that number nearly doubles to close to 400 on special occasions like Mandela Day.
Mr Jappie explained that ongoing fundraising efforts have been key to keeping the soup kitchen running.
Philadelphia Tabernacle, a Pentecostal church, is deeply committed to uplifting the Manenberg community.
Through their work, they strive to bring light and love to a community often overlooked and forgotten.
One of the grateful beneficiaries, Veronica Morris said: “Food fills more than just the stomach — it brings warmth and comfort to a weary heart.
Wholesun Bread said: “We believe that true change begins with small acts of kindness.
“Partnering with the Daily Voice to feed communities this Mandela Day is our way of honouring Madiba’s legacy – one rooted in unity, dignity, and compassion.
“For us, Mandela Day is not just a date on the calendar; it’s a call to action – to uplift others, share what we have, and nourish more than just bodies, but also hope.”
These feeding initiatives show the true power of community and kindness.
When people come together to share food, time, and care, they bring hope and strength to those facing hardship.
Let this spirit of giving inspire us to keep supporting one another every day.
