WARNING: Video contains foul language

A video of a taxi gaatjie being moered for allegedly snatching a woman’s cellphone has been spreading like wildfire on social media.

The man was accused of robbing people along Voortrekker in Goodwood on Sunday.

And on Monday he was caught and donnered, allegedly by taxi drivers who are gatvol of a string of robberies which have been carried out on the Voortrekker route.

Driver Charlton Oreilly shared the video on Facebook, commenting: “A very disturbing video has been going around on the Bellville/Cape Town route regarding commuters that travel on the suspect’s van daily.

“The incident had occurred on Sunday morning and it didn’t occur inside my van, this is my taxi (on the video) that works everyday that isn't a part of robbing people and putting commuters’ lives at risk.

“We always try to protect our people that use this taxi on a daily basis as we don't allow any wrong things to happen when it comes to this van. This taxi is a safe and reliable transport.

“This is a matter that has to be addressed urgently because it’s becoming a regular thing on our routes.”

Oreilly could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.

The 25-second video starts with two men standing next to a minibus.

The cameraman follows them to the suspect, who is pushed against the taxi, while a man beats him with a stick over his back.

The cowering gaatjie gets a gap and runs for his life.

He jumps into a taxi, whose driver is waiting for him, and they speed off.

Throughout the video, a man calls the suspect a “n***er who robs people of their cellphones” and encourages the drivers to moer him.

Lavonde Visser Lotriet reacted to the video on Facebook and said: “They grabbed my cellphone on that corner all three times... I see the police standing there at night... But nothing helps... Thanks to the man who beat him.”

Bellville Taxi Association spokesperson Henrietta Paulsman says: “I know about this incident and I have told everyone on this route not to take the gaatjie in their vans anymore.

“This is giving us a bad name as the association. And the gaatjie was in a pirate taxi which whisked him away on that day.”
