Two sterk skelms are behind bars after they were allegedly caught stealing a cast iron bench by wakker security officers in Plumstead.
Combat Force Manager Michael Cameron says they were left dumbfounded after the duo were spotted lifting the heavy garden bench over two walls and ran across the railway line in Plumstead with it as they tried to escape.
“On Good Friday shortly after 8am officers Robin Fernandez and Riedewaan Heynes were called to Brampton Road where someone had spotted the two suspects carrying a whole garden bench made of wood and cast iron over a wall.
“Interestingly they carried the heavy bench over another wall along the railway line and started running with it.”
He says after being informed of the theft, the officers ran towards the railway line where they found the skelms trying to escape.
“They are very strong because that bench is heavy. They were arrested and the owner was called to the scene and identified that the bench belongs in his garden.
“They had planned on selling it for scrap metal. They were arrested and taken to Diep River Police Station where they spent the weekend. It was a Bad Friday for them.”
SAPS’ FC van Wyk confirms the arrest and says suspects, aged 29 and 41, were charged with theft and possession of stolen property.
They appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court today.
