Guests at a hotel in the Cape Town CBD were robbed by FIFTEEN armed skelms.
The men stormed into the super-luxury Mount Nelson Hotel in Orange Street on Tuesday just before 11pm.
They gained access to the premises by gun-pointing a security guard at the entrance and threatening to kill him.
Police say the gang were travelling in two cars - a white Toyota Corolla and white VW Polo.
The skelms took the guard’s radio and baton, and two skurke stayed behind in the guard house.
The robbers, who wore balaclavas, entered the hotel foyer next to the bar and immediately demanded staff and guests to hit the ground.
Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, confirmed the robbery, saying: “According to reports, 15 unknown males driving two vehicles, a white [Toyota] Corolla and white VW Polo entered at the gate.
“The security guard at the front gate access control point was pointed at with a firearm and threatened.
“The suspects started breaking the glass cabinet display windows in the foyer with big hammers and removed jewellery, and also took an undisclosed amount of cash from the cash register. The suspects fled the scene in two vehicles.”
A police source added: “The stolen items includes beads at an estimated value of R50 000 and cash from the front desk till amounting to R6 000.”
Van Wyk says SAPS have “activated a multi-disciplinary action team” to catch the gang.
