VICTIM: William Booth
A suspect in the attempted murder of top criminal lawyer William Booth has been released. This emerged as Zane Killian appeared in Cape Town Magistrates’ Court with four co-accused Kauthar Brown, Ebrahim Deare, Riyaad Gesant and Kim Kashiefa Smith.
Booth was shot at, but left unscathed after the attack at his Higgovale home in April.
Five suspects were arrested after being caught on CCTV footage.
A Hawks investigation linked Killian to the hit.
On Tuesday court heard that the case against Igsaan Williams had been withdrawn.
National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesman Eric Ntabazalila said the reasons for the withdrawal have not been confirmed yet.
“They all have been charged with gang-related charges, conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, unlawful interception of communication and access or interception of any data without permission of Booth.
“But accused number 5 (Williams) didn’t appear because the case against him has been withdrawn.”
Former rugby player, Killian, has also been charged with the murder of top cop Charl Kinnear who was shot dead in September.
The 39-year-old has changed his lawyer to Johan van Aswegen and Eric Bryer will still be the instructing attorney.
Bryer explained that Advocate Eckardt Rosemann had to step aside as there was a conflict of interest.
Killian will appear in Bellville Regional Court on 27 November for the murder of Kinnear and again on 30 November in Cape Town Magistrates’ Court for Booth’s attempted murder case.
Smith is the only accused out on bail while the four other accused remain in custody.
