FUNNYMAN: Lungelo Ndlovu, 26

The Joke In The Box’s “open mic” performer’s comedy career hasn’t always been an open book.

For a long time, Lungelo Ndlovu’s comedy career was his own little secret.

The 26-year-old from Mooi River went on stage for the first time in 2010, but he didn’t even tell his family he was doing comedy while he was studying Film and Video at CPUT.

Next week, he will be sharing a stage with some of Cape Town’s top comedians - MC Kurt Schoonraad, Shimmy Isaacs, Carl Weber and Dailin Oliver - at the Daily Voice’s comedy show.

The act kicks-off at 7pm at City Hall on Tuesday, August 2 –  the night before the local election public holiday.

Lungelo says: “I really think that the Daily Voice comedy show will open even more doors for me.”

His inspiration comes from his family and friends, like the fact that he is helping his older brother come to terms with being a dad.

“My daughter is three years old, and now here I am telling my 30-year-old brother how to fold the clothes and do the nappy thing,” he laughs.

Lungelo would like to use his film and video experience to help other up and coming comedians.

“In the future, I’d like to do TV shows and sitcoms, but based here in Cape Town because there’s a big focus on that in Johannesburg right now,” he says.

He admires comedian David Kau because he’s “chilled and always shares his knowledge with you and helps you with great advice”.

Tickets are R120 and are available from Computicket or at the door.
