A Cape Town woman, who lives in the UK, has gone viral after sharing a music video she made with her relatives in the Mother City.
Carmen Alger, her siblings and their mother all recorded the song separately before she mixed it and their harmonious voices came out amazingly well.
Carmen, 37, who teaches music in London says they sang an old family favourite called Smile.
The soprano singer says the lockdown has forced her family to become tech-savvy in order to communicate and be part of each other’s special occasions.
Her mom Joy Ross, 63, sister Lindsay Fortuin, 34 and brother Jon Ross, 30, all live in different suburbs in Cape Town.
“The last time I was in South Africa was at the end of last year when my dad passed away,” says Carmen.
“My dad loved singing and always tried to get us to sing together.
“I came back to the UK and shortly after that, Covid-19 hit. We were missing each other and all feeling stuck.
“I found this song online and thought it would be fun to try together.
“We decided on who would sing which part, and I got them to send me videos and recordings of them doing it which I put together here.
“I got a bit emotional the first time I heard us all together, it was like I was singing with them.
“I thought we’d share it with a few friends on Facebook, but it’s been amazing to see how many people have responded.”
By Sunday their video, posted on Carmen’s Facebook page, had been viewed over 9,400 times.
“We’ve surprised ourselves with what we can do creatively especially with celebrating virtual birthdays and marking special occasions online,” adds Carmen.
