BACKLASH: TV star Lalla Hirayama BACKLASH: TV star Lalla Hirayama
Local TV personality Lalla Hirayama has faced backlash on social media for posting a parody video of a coloured woman singing Too legit to quit.
In the now-deleted post on video platform Tik Tok, the 32-year-old Japanese-South African uses a voiceover of an old video, made by Cape Town singer Salome Damons-Johanson last July.
In the viral clip, a 50-something vrou does her own lagbol rendition of the MC Hammer hit, rapping: “Too legit, too legit to quit, die boer se pit, die boer se pit is wit, gie my tappy want tappy maak my happy, gie my gin want dagga maak my dun, gie my bier want buur maak my suur.”
It wasn’t as funny when Lalla did it though, as she tried to put on a coloured accent and draaied a doekie on her kop.

After the video made its way to Twitter, the Vuzu and LallaLand host was called out by users for using stereotypes regarding coloured women to get a “cheap laugh”.
Even Cape Town radio presenter Irma G got in the action, tweeting: “This is unacceptable! This is not funny! Are likes and retweets really this important to you?”
@LingDeeYoh also let rip, tweeting: “The TikTok from Lalla is not cute or funny. We try in so many ways to not be caricatures and stereotypes. She is neither Coloured, not that it would make it any better. It’s vile and ugly. If you find it funny good for you and proceed to unfriend me.”
After receiving a lot of heat in her mentions, Lalla tried to defend her video by equating it to people making fun of Asian people.
But the damage was done, it seems.
