Comedian Carl Weber has a split personality and is looking forward to introducing his other persona to fans this weekend.
Carl has been having fun on social media with “relative”, Uncle Cliffy, who one day just filled his body like an unwanted spirit.
Carl, 42, says everyone has an “Uncle Cliffy” in their family, which is probably why many people enjoy his character.
“We all mos have that one uncle we can relate to when you see Uncle Cliffy,” says Carl.
“Uncle Cliffy is a 60-year-old uncle from Lotus River who is married to aunty Doreen, has a best friend called Basil, and he lives with his son Donny in a granny flat in the yard.”
Carl, from Strandfontein, also hosts a radio show called Happy Hour every Monday from 11am-12pm with Dalin Oliver on Good Hope FM.
Carl says Uncle Cliffy was born on the Happy Hour show.
“We were trying out different characters for the show and he was the most relatable as everyone.
“I was really just messing around one day and I started talking in Uncle Cliffy’s voice, it was like a spirit just filled my body and took over in an ou ballie voice and style.”
Carl says the comedy scene is tough at times, but when it’s good, it really pays off making grappies for a living.
PERSONA: Uncle Cliffy kom vir jou
“Cape Town comedy is not lacking but it does get challenging, there are so many talented comedians right now that Capetonians are spoilt for choice.
“I’m proud to be in a position where I have a strong loyal following. As in any industry, it’s a hard hustle, but well worth it.”
This is Carl’s first attempt at a “two-man show”, as he transitions between himself and the naughty Uncle Cliffy.
He says Uncle Cliffy says those things he would normally only think of.
“He is a #nofilter,” says Carl.
Uncle Cliffy, with his fancy hats, dik chain around his neck, and showing off an unnatural amount of chest, will join Carl in his show at the Mother City Comedy Festival at the Baxter Theatre on Friday.
Carl is now worried that Uncle Cliffy might steal his thunder: “This is everyone’s uncle, the one who never watches his mouth and is somewhat inappropriate but at the time refreshingly honest and endearing. Watch out, Uncle Cliffy kom vir jou!”
