Ingredients
- 2-3 tins of butter beans
- 500g beef / mutton pieces
- 2 tbsp cooking oil
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 1 tsp garlic paste
- 1 tsp ginger paste
- 1 medium tomato, chopped
- 1 tsp tomato paste
- 2 green chillies, deseeded and chopped
- 1½ tsp cumin powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp turmeric / borrie
- 2-3 tsp leaf masala / roasted masala
- 1-2 tsp salt (according to your taste)
- 3 cardamoms
- 1 stick cinnamon
- 1 tsp chilli powder (optional)
- 2 tbsp plain yoghurt (optional)
- Fresh chopped coriander leaves
Method
Pour the oil into a heavy based pot, add the chopped onions and braise until the onions are transparent about 10 minutes over medium heat.
Add cinnamon and cardamom.
Add garlic, ginger and chopped tomatoes
Add the meat.
Cook and mix well for about 5-10 minutes.
Add little water at a time as necessary as you go along.
Add the spices, chillies and tomato paste and cook until the meat is done, approximately 40 minutes depending on the type of meat you are using.
Add the tin butter beans and yoghurt, cook over medium to low heat for a further 10-15 minutes.
Garnish with fresh coriander before serving.
Best served with boiled white rice or roti, atchars and sambals.
