The Daily Voice did their bit for Mandela Day by spending some time with the golden oldies of the Lotus River Place Old Age Home where we shared a warm cup of soup, bread, sweet treats and goodie bags with the seniors.
There were bright smiles and grateful tears when our team, and the mense from Wholesome Breads, spent the afternoon chatting and listening to the stories of the 120 seniors who live at the frail care unit.

Daily Voice Editor, Taariq Halim, says he felt at home after the friendly welcome he received.
“I didn’t expect them to be so happy to see us, they made us feel like they are part of our family as they knew who we are and also are familiar with our stories,” he says.
Facility manager, Sister Johnson, 44, who lives on the property with her family, says she loves to kuier with them as well.
“They know I live here and so some of them will come and knock on my door, they are more like family, they are my own. I’ve been here for three years and I enjoy listening to their stories.”
Auntie Olga Hendricks, 84, says she’s enjoying her time at Lotus River Place.
“I love knitting and I’m still able to do a lot of things, don’t be fooled by my age, I knitted my own jersey also,” the feisty auntie laughed.
The team from Wholesome Breads also handed out lekker chocolates to the seniors who eagerly unwrapped their sweet treats and immediately enjoyed it.
Anthea Grever from Wholesome Breads says it was a special time: “We enjoyed spending time with the seniors and would love to do it again.”
A special thanks to Wholesome Breads, who supplied the bread and soup; Food Lovers Market who provided the ingredients for the soup; Good Hope Sales who dona- ted beanies and socks; and Watkins Valeur who packed in salf for the ou mense.
